A thought

" And once the storm is over, you won’t remember how you made it through, how you managed to survive. You won’t even be sure, whether the storm is really over. But one thing is certain. When you come out of the storm, you won’t be the same person who walked in. That’s what this storm’s all about."
Haruki Murakami - Kafka on the Shore

  3. If only that were true!
As I get older I find that memories haunt me. Memories of events that seemed ordinary at the time. When I was young and foolish. When I was preoccupied. When I was angry. And many of those memories are not pleasant. Sometimes I recall lovely happy times, but they do not have the haunting quality that the others have. Every time I was rude to my mother, even as a child. Those arrive with get wrenching effects. Every time I did not do my work to the highest standard - the recriminations land heavily asking if anyone was hurt by my laziness. These memories are full of condemnation and are very distressing. The list goes on. I really did those things.
I recall my father wrestling with such thoughts as he aged. He had been tortured over a long period of time. So I know I am not alone with this experience.
Never ever assume you will not remember. You will, just not when you planned to remember. I am not sure how murderers cope as they age. Perhaps they welcome dementia or turn to drink.
The storm is never really over.
