Just a link...

There has been a terrible tragedy in a friend's life. Her brother in law, an ex-soldier, took his life a couple of days ago and I have been looking after her little boy. A 2 1/2 year old staying over doesn't leave me much time for sewing, so I don't have any of my own stitching to share.
No matter whether you accept or not the reasons for our troops to serve in overseas conflict, I think no one can deny soldiers see things which no human being should witness. I recently listened to a podcast of Major General John Cantwell talking to Richard Fidler.  I found it extremely moving and thought provoking and would highly recommend it to anyone who wants a deeper understanding of PTS disorder suffered by our troops.  You can hear it HERE.

Do you like diamonds?  How about these?
Just brilliant and there is a fabulous tutorial HERE.  Huge thanks to Kati From the Blue Chair for sharing her creativity and skills with us all.

  7. oh how sad. I sometimes think the troops are unfairly looked upon by members of the public for their involvement in unpopular conflict. I blame the governments for that. The soldiers are just doing their job, and what a brave job it is.

  10. That is truly sad and sad that no one could help him.
My BIL is on disability but he has been lucky with good care and facilities that he can stay in and be watched when he goes into his bad times.

  11. how devastating for your friend. The soldiers seem to risk more than their lives fighting in these wars.

  12. I am so sorry for your friend and their family and for all soldiers everywhere as war is a horrible thing to endure for anyone. I can remember as a child asking my Dad who had been in WW2, if he had ever killed anyone and he got this terrible look in his eyes and told me to never ever ask that question of anyone who had been in a war....so of course he had and I was just a child and had no idea what it really meant. But the tears are falling right now because I am older and hopefully wiser and realize the suffering that goes on in our world. I can't bear to watch violence on t.v. and that is fiction. I can't imagine how seeing it up close and real would do to a person's psyche. My prayers go out to all of them.

  16. Mel, I'm so happy that you could help in friend in such desperate need.
Our troops (and those who have gone before) bring tears to my eyes, when I think of the sacrifices they make... them and their families.
    Forever grateful xx

  17. Oh Mel....ditto to all the above comments, they have expressed everything I want to say..
It is why I got involved in making quilt tops for Aussie Heroes, where the quilts are sent to our service men and women overseas. Jan posts messages on her blog from the soldiers, and they are so grateful that women all over Australia are making quilts for them.
