Tuesday Treasures

Today gives us the chance to celebrate all the darling pets who give us so much love.  As many of you know four cheeky little dogs reside with me at the moment, in fact when Maxie from across the road comes to visit there are five.
Two - Matilda and Essie are mine. Two - Pip and Bella are long term guests.  I love each and everyone with all my heart.

But today I want to tell you about my adored kelpie, Possum.  About 17 years ago the wildlife ranger in our area was on school crossing duty, as the crossing lady was sick.  We got talking and she told me about a stray dog she had picked up on her day off.  The dog was about 8 years old and had recently had puppies. The ranger's heart went out to her so she took her home to try and find her owner.

She was not successful and as the ranger already had three dogs, after two weeks this beautiful dog had to go to the pound.  Eight days passed and no owner was found and no one wanted to adopt an older dog.  So she was to be euthanised at 11.00 that morning.  Thank goodness that was day I chatted to the ranger.

I raced to the pound, I couldn't bear to think of a new mother dog being killed.  From the moment I saw her little black and tan face, speckled with grey, and gazed into her beautiful eyes, I knew I had to save her.  She was the most wonderful, faithful companion for the next eight years.  She was so devoted to me, I'm sure she would have laid down her life for me.

A couple of years later a funny black labrador/kelpie cross came to live with us too.  He was only a few months old and some-one had left him tied to the door of the Op Shop (thrift store) with a note saying they didn't want him anymore.  We named him Toby and Possum immediately adopted him and they were constant companions for another six years.  Eventually Possum died and Toby lived on for many more years.

Eventually Toby, too, was a very old dog, a sick old dog and we has to make the sad decision to have him put to sleep.  The vet was to come to our house at 10.00 in the morning to end his pain.  An hour or so before she was due to arrive, I looked out my kitchen window, and there sitting on the top lawn was Possum. I truly believe she had come back from dog heaven to wait for her friend.  An amazing sense of peace came over me.

I know the whole pack of wonderful dogs I have owned and loved, over the last 55 years, are there waiting for me in dog heaven too.  So here's to Sparky, Fancy, Sammy, Daisy, Rusty, Neddy, Harry,  Ragsy, Ben, Elmo, Possum, Toby, Matilda, Essie, Pippi, and Bellybutton - all of whom have bought so much doggy love into my life.

Now's the time to share your much loved pets.  Just pop your details into Mr Linky and join in the fun.

  2. My heart goes out to you losing you special friend. I had to have my little dog Scuffy put to sleep last year he had cancer. After one op we though all was well, but then it came back. We could do no more and had to let him go. I still miss his company.

  10. Coco Chanel is her name and she is my new best friend. I was given her by my nephew when he had to be stationed in Alaska and was afraid she would be eaten by a big bear or something. She has lived with us for two years now and we love her so much. She is a Shi Tzu and is the love of my life right now. Our cat Dusty and she dust it up sometimes in the house but really they are besties. Whenever Dusty is outside and wants in Coco lets us know. I'm sorry for your loss, it is heartfelt.
