Tuesday Treasures - our Pets

Today I thought I'd tell you the story of my darling little Esse.
About eight years ago, I came out from work and saw a little creature running among the traffic on the very busy main road which passed by where I worked.  I tried to call her from the side of the road but she was so scared, she just kept running around in a panic.  I was so worried that she would get run over that I walked onto the road and held up my hands to stop the traffic.

Still she wouldn't come to me, so I had to lie down on the road and quietly beckon her over and luckily I caught her and no one ran over the two of us. The little dog now in my arms was a very, very skinny bedraggled little thing.  She was shaking so much and looked so ill, I was worried she may have been hit by a car, so I took her to my vet.  She had no collar and looked so unloved.  It was heart-breaking.

I rang John and explained what had happened and he met me at the vets. The vet persuaded us she should go to the pound to see if they could find her owner.  I didn't really like this but it was the legal thing to do, so I handed her over.  As the vet carried her away, she looked over his shoulder and made eye contact with John and his heart melted too.  I filled in an expression of interest form and Whittlesea Council was supposed to contact me if she was not claimed.

After a couple of weeks I hadn't heard anything so I rang the council and they said they'd sent her to the RSPCA and gave me a reference number.  Over I went to Burwood, but the RSPCA had no record of her so I had to walk around and look at dozens and dozens of little lost faces until I found her.  This was pretty heart-breaking.  It is beyond my understanding how anyone could abandon their pet.

Luckily I found her huddled on a blanket, shaking.  The RSPCA said she was one of the thinnest dogs they'd ever had in and they believed she had been mistreated as she cringed when people went near her. I bought her, they desexed her the next day, and the day after that adorable, wonderful, devoted, loving little Essie came home with me.  She immediately became Matilda's (my very naughty, tiny, little white poodle) devoted follower.

Essie is such a sweet-heart and I am so glad she came into my life.  I love all my pets so much and they mean the world to me. Here are the other little darlings, Matilda, Bella and Pippi, who live here.

They really are my treasures.

Do you have a pet you would like to share with us? I can't wait to see them.  Please put you details into Mr Linky and join in the fun.

There will be a small giveaway of a Bunnyhill Pattern and some fabric.  One chance if you play along, one chance if you leave a comment and two chances if you do both.

  6. After trying for the last two Tuesdays - today I will actually put some photos up!! Love your little dogs. WE're the same with ours. I can never understand how people do the things they do. It's like children - you make the decisions to have them and once you do they're yours for life! Being a foster carer, though, I know that people are as reckless with their children as they are with pets!!

  7. Hi Melody, I so enjoyed reading about your dear little dog and how she came to have a forever home with you. I have a sweet little dog named Honey Bear, she came from a rescue organization called " Paws"- she was rescued from a Sydney pound, she had not been mistreated, I think she had puppies and they just wanted the puppies, not her! :( Our previous dog, Matilda or Tilly came from the RSPCA, she had been cruelly treated and was terrified of everything, it took a long time to earn her trust, and when that happened she had such a joy for life. Unfortunately we found that she was born with just one kidney, and she went into kidney failure, our final act of love for her was to set her free. It has been 4 years now and I still cry when I think of how unfair life can be for animals such as Tilly. Having another pet to love has helped me so much. I can't imagine not having one. Thanks for sharing your lovely story, hugs and pats to your lovely little dogs, Sandy.

  9. This is such a wonderful story!!!!
    Pinkie's story is quite similar.

I received a link about a litter of kittens that were abandonned in a carton box right in front of a pet store (at least these people were thinking!).
I fell immediately in love with the whole lot, and contacted them to adopt one of the kittens.
Pinkie was neutered and given the shots and came to my home.
She was very skinny, had almost no fur at all and coughed and sneezed all the time.
But the moment a opened the carrying box, at home, she came to me and purred and licked my hands and followed me around all the time.
She is healthy now, it's been two months now, and she is happy all the time, jumping on things, playing with her toys, eating a lot, and purring all the time.
She is sooooo sweet!!!! So affectionate that every now and then she stops playing and comes to cuddle with me. She gained weight, her furr is growing long and shiny... and I get the feeling all the time that she is grateful to me.
    A true love story.

Had to share it with you guys.

  13. How lucky you are to have such a lovely canine family. And how lucky are they to have you. I know how much you adore them.
The only regret I have regarding pets (cats) is that I want lots and lots but ... due to circumstances beyond ... (etc, etc) I have to be happy with just one putty-tat and one pupskey.
Having to walk past a cage full of orphans at the vet the other day almost ripped my heart in two.

  14. Oh sweetie BLESS YOU for rescuing her, and taking the time to track her down!!! I'm sure she is so happy you did, how can anyone mistreat an animal...or abandon them...I just want to hug her, and you for caring for her!

  26. What a wonderful story, not the bit about the being mistreated of course, but the fairy tale ending :-) Funny I posted about our dog today, not realising you were doing this as a Tuesday Treasure, so I don't know if mine qualifies for linking or not, but will do it just in case :-)

  28. It's so saddening that people can be abusive and dismissive towards these wonderful creatures who put their trust in us. I'm so glad that Esse found her forever home with you and your husband where she is loved and adored as she should be. All of your dogs are so cute!

  29. I always thank someone who rescues a dog. What a sad story, and I'm so glad that you were persistent! What a lucky pup that YOU were the person to come to her at that awful, scary time.

  31. i posted a link to a post i did recently about my two pugs. both rescues. i love your story about essie. both of my girls are from the pounds and were found roaming as strays, even though there were obviously pets at one time. i can't understand why people put their pets out because they are old, or just have 3 legs.

  33. What a big heart you have.
I agree that shelters and rescues do their valued work, but I hate when a sweet baby slips through the cracks and flaws in the system. It was a blessing you were able to find each other again.

I am so happy to have found your blog, except that I want to spend hours reading more and more!
