And even better it's a Blog Hop organised by wonderful Madam Samm at Sew We Quilt and with fabulous Carol from Just Let Me Quilt as our cheerleader.
I decided to design a little project and share the tutorial for my part of the hop. So here goes...
A Ho Ho Ho Christmas Stocking
Materials List
- 24" / 60cm of linen or other chosen fabric for the outer part of the stocking.
I buy my linen at Ikea. It is just such good value. This year I bought a couple of metres of a gorgeous grey to use in lots of my gifts.
- Scraps of fabric for reindeers.
- Vliesofix to adhere your reindeer pieces or, of course, you could needle turn if you wish
- 24" / 60cm of lining fabric. Again mine is from French General. I only had 40cm of fabric so I had to join my lining, but this doesn't matter as it will be inside the stocking
- Scrap of ribbon or twine for hanging
- The Reindeer Pattern.
I adore the designs of Amanda Weatherill and have purchased quite a few. She has a fabulous blog, The Patchsmith,
If, however, you don't want to purchase this little download you can follow this LINK to a multitude of free Christmas applique patterns.
Last year I made quite a few little linen sweetie bags featuring a snowman designed by Anne Sutton of Bunny Hill
and this year I will make a whole lot more using this sweet reindeer design.
- The stocking template which you can download HERE. Extend your pattern by 15"/ 38cm
What to do
Cut out your stocking and lining pieces.
Trace the reindeer pieces onto the shiny side of the vliesofix and roughly cut out. Remember to use the reverse image of the way you want your little fellows to face. Iron on to the back of the appropriate fabric and cut out on the lines. Peel off the backing paper.
Iron the pieces onto the front stocking piece.
Blanket stitch around each piece.
Sew the two stocking pieces together, right sides together. Do the same for the lining but leave an opening so you can turn the whole stocking right sides out.
Turn the outside stocking right side out but leave the lining inside out. Place the stocking inside the stocking lining and sew around the top of both.
Turn right side out through the gap you left in the lining. Sew the gap shut.
Give your stocking a quick iron and fold back the cuff. Then fill it to the brim with lots of wonderful Christmassy gifts.

Easily made in a couple of hours and I think it's rather cute. Hope you like it too.

ReplyDeleteWhat a great tutorial. I thought it would be a lot harder than it was. It amazing how much easier some of the tasks are when you read the tutorials. Thank you for a great tutorial. And, it is winter there, eh? It's not like it's 100 degrees everyday. But then again when it is Christmas, it is summer. That's a bummer for us who hope for a white Christmas. It's all what you like and that to which you are accustomed. Anyhow, home is where the heart is.

ReplyDeleteWhat a great stocking and super cute Reindeer too. I have been drooling over the Patchsmith's Mug Rug patterns for weeks now. They are all so great and a great price too. I haven't decided which ones to buy, but have plans to make some as gifts for the holidays. I'd love to buy them all, but sadly, I'm not rich. LOL
Great info about the linen. I've looked at IKEA once in awhile for their fabrics but haven't bought any yet. The times I did have the extra cash to buy some I could never find anyone to cut the fabrics. I wandered all around and never could find any person so I gave up. Next time I'll have to check the linen out though and hopefully will find someone to cut it for me too.
